CONVERSATION PIECE started off in 2010 as an ongoing research project by Beatrice Brovia and Nicolas Cheng. The project seeks for new scenarios and audiences for contemporary craft, jewelry representing often the lenses through which the process of making is perceived and experienced.  It also represents an incubator where diverse tools and knowledge from the applied and fine arts come to collide. Different chapters, each with new content, will develop through time: this way the potential of jewelry is sounded out not only in its own right, but in relation to other practices as well. Conversation Piece also refers to informal group portraits typical of the late XVIII century, usually small in scale, showing people in domestic interior, interacting with each other, performing quotidian actions. Later in the century the term was extended to any “unusual” object that stimulates conversation, arousing comment or interest.

The top half of the picture represents the set up of our first solo exhibition we did together, Conversation Piece, Chapter One: On The Doorway. It took place at Ventura Lambrate during the Milano Salone del Mobile, in April 2011. The other half is a “making of” snapshot of the second chapter of our project, Conversation Piece, Chapter Two: Façades. This image was taken in May 2011, right before we finished and presented the work during Design Miami/Basel (June 2011).
